ISRAEL'S DEFENCE POLICY: THE LIMITS OF MILITARY POWER (2023)

The course curriculum will delve into the comprehensive aspects of Israel's National Security Policy. During the initial phase of the course, we will examine Israel's singular geo-strategic situation and how it influences the country's understanding of national security.

In the latter part of the course, we will analyze the tactics and alternatives that Israel has adopted to address its geo-strategic situation without resolving the conflict through direct means, such as forming strategic partnerships, acquiring conventional weaponry, and utilizing implicit nuclear deterrence. We will also evaluate methods for mitigating the situation, including limited security arrangements, building confidence through security measures, and arms control. The final topic of discussion will encompass the suitability of Israel's security framework in the nuclear-armed Middle East, the viability of establishing a balance of terror like the Cold War, and whether it presents a threat or a solution. We will also consider the alternative approach of Israel joining a Weapons of Mass Destruction-Free Zone in the region.

  • The course will be held by Professor Eitan Barak, Ph.D., from the Shalem College and Bar-Ilan University, who is an expert in the field of weaponry law, security regimes, and arms control and disarmament, primarily in the Middle East. Students enrolled in SNSPA's BA program who attend a minimum of 80% of the classes will earn credits.
